The Onaga baseball team were in non-league action on March 28th taking on Jackson Heights. Both games had plenty of tense situations and fantastic moments and the Buffaloes ended up on the winning side of two 1-run games.
Onaga was able to stoke the offense early on as Hunter Lamond singled and then advanced to 2nd base on an error. Rayce Fisher brought him around to score on a single of his own and the Buffaloes led 1-0 at the end of 1. In the 2nd, Jackson Kolterman came to bat with runners on 2nd and 3rd and hit a scorching grounder through the infield that cleared the bases and made it 3-0 Onaga. Jackson Heights was able to score in the top of the 3rd, but thanks to a terrific play from Carter Hutfles and a quick tag by LJ Koelzer at home the damage was limited to just a single run.
The Cobras did eventually earn that 2nd run on a hot ground ball deep in the hole and suddenly it was a one run game in the 4th, that was until Onaga was able to get a pair of hits from Dylan Magnett and Xander Berges. Add to that a productive out from Jackson Kolterman with a fly out to center scoring Keagan Venneberg and Onaga went back up 6-2.
Jackson Heights would manage to put the game in hot water again with a pair of runs in the top of the 7th but couldn't complete the task against Hunter Lamond who went 5 1/3 innings striking out 7.
In game 2, the offense was scarce thanks to prime pitching performance including Jackson Kolterman striking out 9 in 7 innings of scoreless work. Offensively Kolterman scored the lone run of the game after a hot grounder to center as well as a Hunter Lamond single. With runners at the corners, Kolterman made a break for it, stole home, and gave Onaga the only run needed to get the Game 2 victory, the sweep of Jackson Heights and the Buffaloes their 4th straight win.
Next up for Onaga, they travel to Randolph to take on the Blue Valley boys. That game happens on Thursday, April 4th.
