The day started in 2A with the Valley Heights girls taking on 1 seed and undefeated Wichita County. Well when I say undefeated I mean before the game because that moniker would fall at the hands of the Lady Mustangs as the 8 seed would defeat the 1 seed. Valley Heights started the game off with a big run and before Wichita County knew it they were trailing by 8 just minutes into the game.
That lead would get cut in half with a pair of Wichita County buckets but still at the end of Valley Heights led 16-10. Defenses picked up in the 2nd quarter, forcing multiple turnovers from both teams. Wichita County got within one at 16-15 4:46 left in the first half but Back to back buckets by Murk and Ava Smith and the Mustang lead was up to 5 at 20-15. 1:41 left before halftime. Smith finished as the leading points with 18 points and completing the double double with 11 rebounds as well.
The Lady Mustangs would keep Wichita County at arm’s length for the majority of the first half and lead 23-17 at halftime. More of the same in the 3rd quarter as Maggie Toerber would bucket her 14th point of the game midway through the quarter. Toerber finished with 16 in the game.
Maybe the best play of the day came just a little later in the quarter. Ava Smith missed a 3, grabbed her own rebound, missed the follow up but grabbed another rebound and this time got the bucket. A terrific hustle play and showing how to stick with it by Smith on this play.
As we headed to the 4th quarter the lead had ballooned to 15 at 42-27 after Valley Heights had a plus 9 edge in the 3rd. The momentum just kept coming for the Lady Mustangs with that lead going anywhere between 15 and 19 for the majority of the quarter and finally with about a minute left and down 17 Wichita County’s coach cleared his bench and the Lady Mustangs were off to the next round knocking off the one seed Wichita County 52-35 and advancing to Friday’s 2nd round action against 5 seed Riverside who picked up their 22nd win of the year defeating Hoxie. That game will be at 2pm on Friday out in Dodge City.
