Heading into the game this past Tuesday against Axtell, Doniphan West knew they would have to put together one of their best performances of the year if they were to knock off an Eagle team that had only dropped one game so far on the season and it was clear from the beginning, D-West was up for the challenge.
Axtell had several uncharacteristic turnovers that would set up their opponents for baskets on the other end and at the end of the 1st quarter, Axtell trailed 12-8. The Mustang crowd and players were abuzz with excitement and for good reason, this start couldn't have been any better for the Orange and Blue.
In the 2nd quarter, Axtell would bounce back to retake the lead behind a familiar faces for this Axtell program. Eli Broxterman started to take over in the low post and Brandon Schmelzle was able to pull up from nearly all over the floor and suddenly Axtell found themselves back on top by the slimmest of margins at 24-23. The back and forth would continue in the 2nd half as Doniphan West came out of the locker room on fire and looked totally rejuvenated and made this the most competitive quarter of the entire game including seeing leading scorer Kelby Windmeyer cross into double digits finishing with a team high 12 for D-West as they once again took the lead setting up what was to be going to be a can't miss 4th period.
Once in the 4th quarter, Axtell really started to pick up steam with their defense putting together one of their best closing game sequences we have seen all year out of Jayson Tynon's team holding D-West to just 5 4th quarter points on their way to a 47-42 victory.
Axtell was led in scoring by Eli Broxterman's 15 point effort which included one trey ball and a perfect night at the free throw line. Schmelzle added a lucky 13, Colin Shaughnessy was at the line a game high 4 times on his way to 7 points, Logan Sandmann earned all 6 of his points from deep, Grady Buessing chipped in 4 and. it was 2 points apiece from Wyatt DDetweiler and Grant Buessing toround out scoring for Axtell.
In the loss, Doniphan West was led by Kelby Windmeyer's 12 points, 9 points each came from Kolter Peterson Dustin Veach, Veach earning all of his from 3 point range. Michael Albers tallied 7 with Hudsen Penny rounding out the scoring for D-West with 5.
The Axtell win was their 10th of the year while Doniphan West fell to 4-10.
