For the Axtell boys basketball team, getting off to a hot start in the 2025 basketball season was certainly a top priority and after a pair of big wins last week, they have gotten off to a great start.
The Eagles' season began in a runaway against the Valley Heights Mustangs with Axtell taking a 70-26 decision. Colin Shaughnessy led the way with 25 points including 3 three pointers. Unsurprisingly, the Axtell Senior looks like he will be a constant spark for his team. Joining Shaughnessy in double figures were Lucas Talbot with 13 and Logan Sandmann with 10. Axtell jumped out to a 20-point lead after 1 quarter and never looked back holding Valley Heights to single digits in every period to take the 44 point win.
This past Friday, the Eagles would take on Cair Paravel in non-league action and once again Axtell would prevail, this time with a little more of a resistance from their opponent as the Lions stuck with Axtell until clutch free throws late in the game would give them a 42-36 victory. Axtell was at the line 14 times in this game creating a perfect avenue for them to take hold of this game. Leading scorer for the Eagles was Logan Sandmann with 15 points, Wyatt Detweiler added 11 and despite an 18 point effort from CP's Chase Hastert the Axtell defense kept nearly everyone else in check with Lucas Marichal the next closest scorer earning 7 of his 9 points at the free throw line. Next up is a matchup against Cornerstone. Averaging nearly 60 points per game, Cornerstone on paper could give Axtell fits in more of a full court offense. This one could go a long way in at least a good tuneup for when the Eagles start full-on league play heading into the holiday break.
