Big 2nd half effort vaults Washington County girls to win over Axtell

Going into Friday's game on the road at Washington County, the Axtell girls knew their game plan well and executed it to perfection in the early going. Get out to a strong start and put the pressure on the Lady Tigers to play from behind and thanks to four three-point shots that's exactly what the Lady Eagles did.

Kaylee Sandmann earned 9 points from beyond the arc in the first period part of her team-high 14 points. Additionally, Natalee Strathman would knock down a trey ball in the quarter a the Lady Eagles took a 6 point lead after the first quarter which included keeping Washington County sharpshooter Jesse Hoover to nothing in the quarter as well.

Not surprisingly though, with a scorer like Hoover, she wasn't going to be kept quiet for too long. Instead choosing to do her damage at the free throw line, in fact, Hoover appeared at the charity stripe 13 total times in the game. Still, Axtell was able to maintain a 20-15 lead at halftime, Strathmann led Axtell with 13 and Washington County by Kiersten Tholstrup with 7 points of her own.

The third period is where Tholstrup would really start to catch fire as did the Lady Tiger offense. Kiersten hit a pair of threes as the Tigers had their first double digit quarter of the night coming out of the locker room with a 16 point effort. Ella Dusin registered her first points of the night in the 3rd as well with a put back jumper and we headed into the 4th with the Tigers on the positive side of the scoreboard, leading 31-27.

In the end, it was once again the Jesse Hoover show for Washington County. The guard was at the line 5 more times in the 4th as she rounded out her night with 16 points, 4 points behind the game-high 20 from Tholstrup. Elsewhere for Washington County, Anna Goeckel finished with 8, and 2 each from Dusin and Addy Goeckel.

In the loss, Axtell was led by 14 points from Sandman, 5 from Natalee Strathmann, 4 from Audrey Kostal and Aliyah Lybarger, 3 from Emma Hasenkamp and 2 from Avery Buessing.

Washington County moves to 3-6 in league 8-9 overall. They host Hanover on Tuesday.
