Could somebody check on the scoreboard operator after last Monday's matchup between Doniphan West and Valley Heights softball? A hitting barrage definitely kept them on their toes in a 21-20 D-West walk-off win.
Valley Heights got on the board in the top of the first inning after Krista Porter grounded into a fielder's choice, Tessa Bigham was struck by a pitch, and Shaylee Ekstrum walked, each scoring one run.
Valley Heights added to their early lead in the top of the second inning when an error scored one run, and Leah Steinfort homered to center field, scoring two runs.
Doniphan West grabbed hold in the bottom of the third, scoring nine runs on seven hits to take the lead, 10-6. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by H’Leigha Idol that drove in three.
Valley Heights flipped the game on its head in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits including a 2 RBI single by Krista Porter to take the lead, 11-10.
Valley Heights scored seven runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. Krista Porter hit an RBI double. A bases loaded walk to Shaylee Ekstrum and an error each scored one run. Add in RBI singles from Teagan Spoonts and Tessa Miller, Miller's unpacking a bases loaded situation to score three runs.
Doniphan West made a surge in the bottom of the seventh and looked like they were going to deal the final blow, scoring seven runs on six hits to take the lead, 21-20
Clara Feighner earned the win for D-West. The starting pitcher allowed 15 hits and 20 runs (eight earned) over seven innings, striking out 11 and walking eight. Paige Miller took the loss for Valley Heights. The starting pitcher went 6 2/3 innings, giving up 21 runs (14 earned) on 18 hits, striking out eight and walking six.
Doniphan West totaled 18 hits in the game. Delainee Waggoner, Brooklyn Rawles, Brooklyn Denton, H’Leigha Idol, and Ella Haynes each collected multiple hits. Doniphan West e, earned six walks for the game. Lydia Keebler and Clara Feighner led the team with two free passes each and stole 10 bases in the game.
Valley Heights collected 15 hits in the game. Krista Porter led Valley Heights with four hits in five at bats. Miller, Steinfort, and Spoonts each collected multiple hits for Valley Heights. Shaylee Ekstrum led Valley Heights with three walks.
