The Troy softball team is no stranger to big offensive games but when they met up with Atchison Co. they were able to turn that offense up another couple of notches as they would tally 36 runs in the doubleheader.
Game 1 went Troy's way from the beginning. Gracie Grable would single to lead off the game, Grable would come around to score on a Mackenna Thomas hit later in the inning. After a walk to Grace McConnaughey and an Addison Grable single the Troy lead was 3-0 just one-half inning into the game.
ACCHS would answer back to get within one after three straight singles, the final coming with 2 steaks attached. But that temporary slip up only seemed to fuel the Lady Trojans as they would hang another crooked number in the 2nd. An Emerson Weber RBI double was just the tip of the iceberg for Troy in this inning. Weber advanced to 3rd and then scored on a fielder's choice on a Mackenzie Thomas grounder. Grace McConnaughey tripled and scored on a fielding error and the Troy lead was 6-2 after the top of the 2nd.
Fast forward to the 5th inning still leading by a pair, Mackenzie Christenson and Nicole Judd hit back-to-back doubles to go up 7-4 and Emerson Weber added a 3rd 2 bagger of the inning. Gracie Grable would continue the Troy roll reaching on an error allowing Judd to score, Mackenna Thomas would put the cap on the inning with a 2 RBI single scoring Weber and Grable and Troy would lead 10-4 .
From there, Weber would keep the ACCHS bats quiet striking out 6 in a complete game 7 innings really only facing trouble once along the way. Troy would add insult to injury in the final inning with 9 runs in the top of the 7th walking 5 times, forcing a pair of errors and RBI hits from Gracie and Addison Grable, a 3 run double from Mackenzie Christenson and Mackenna Thomas's game leading 5th RBI on 3 hits and Troy took game 1, 19-6.
You would think after the monstrous effort in game 1, Troy wouldn't have much left for game 2. In fact, it was quite the opposite. The Trojan girls would post seven runs in the first inning of game 2 but rather than swinging a hot bat it was the patience of the Troy girls that was the catalyst for the big inning.
After a Gracie Grable one out single, Troy would put 6 of the next 7 batters aboard via walk as the ACCHS pitching staff had big trouble finding the strike zone. It wasn't until a Gracie Grable single with 2 down in the inning that Troy would get their 2nd hit and by that time, they already led 5-0. Grable's hit would be the final of the inning, it would also come with a pair of runs attached to give Troy a 7-run lead after a half inning.
McConnaughey did give up a leadoff hit to Atchison but worked around it with a pair of ground outs and a pop out to Emerson Weber to end any threat.
Much of the same from the Troy offense in the 2nd inning. A pair of walks and a fielding error from ACCHS allowed the 8th Lady Trojan to score. Troy would manage 7 walks in the 2nd inning earning 5 runs to make it 12-0. Meanwhile, McConnaughey kept posting zeroes in the circle and Troy was one inning away from ending this game via mercy rule.
The patience that Troy had exhibited in the first innings wore off in the third. In it's place was blistering firepower from the Trojan bats that we had seen earlier in the day. Beginning with Addison Grable's leadoff single, she would come around to score on a Christenson RBI.
Things got a bit tough in the middle of the inning after a pair of groundouts, Troy's plans of ending this early were in jeopardy. That was until another stretch of 4 straight RBI singles from Weber, Gracie Grable, Mackenna Thomas, Grace McConnaughey to make it 17-0.
ACCHS were able to strike with one run in the bottom of the inning but by then this game was clearly in the pocket of the Troy Lady Trojans. Troy takes it 17-1 and sweeps the double header in a pair of games neither team will soon forget for better or worse.
Grace McConnaughey would pick up the win in the circle also tying Gracie Grable for the team lead in RBI in the game with 3.
The Troy girls are now 11-5 on the year.
